Go Organic!

When you choose not to purchase products made with dangerous chemicals, you’re not only protecting your health, but supporting sustainable agriculture and clean air and water as well.

Here in North Carolina, many local farmers are switching to organic and sustainable practices, and making their produce available to consumers through grocery stores, restaurants, farmer's markets, and CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture).

For more information about organically and sustainably grown foods in North Carolina, see the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, Carolina Organic Growers, Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, and Growing Small Farms.

  • Find Farmer's Markets, farms, and other sources of local organic food in NC at CFSA's Local Food Finder, or at LocalHarvest.org.

  • Find sustainably-raised meat, poultry, dairy and eggs at stores, farms, restaurants, and mail-order outlets in the US and Canada using the Eat Well Guide.

  • Find CSA Farms in NC. A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a membership farm. Most CSA farms use organic and/or sustainable growing practices. Consumers buy a share of a farm's production directly from the farmer, and then get a variety of seasonal fruits and veggies fresh from the farm every week during the growing season. Some CSA farms also offer flowers, herbs, eggs, or meats. Joining a CSA is a great way to support a local sustainable farmer, get the freshest produce possible at an affordable price, get to know the farm where your food comes from and the people who grow it, and to connect with like-minded folks in your area.
